Christmas 1921
The front page of the LaGrange Graphic, December 15, 1921, was devoted entirely to children’s letters to Santa. At the time, these were simple requests from children, however, looking back on these letters from today provides insight into the lives of children in this period.
LaGrange, Ga., Dec. 8, 1921.
Dear Santa Claus:
I am a little girl, 7 years old. I want you to bring me some nuts, a doll, candy, apples and oranges. That is all. Please bring baby a whistle and a pretty picture book.
Your little girl,
Fannie Hand
Dear Santa Claus:
I am looking for you for Xmas. I want you to bring me a goat and wagon, a knife and a Ford car. I am going to school. I love my teacher and playmates. I am all the boy papa has.
Ison Whatley,
1002 Juniper Street., City
LaGrange Ga., Dec. 12, 1921.
Dear Old Santa:
I want you to bring me a little doll that says mama when you squeeze it, a rattler, a rubber ball and confectionaries. Please don’t forget my little sweetheart, Herschel. Bring him a jumping jack and a big stick of red candy. This is all for this Christmas.
Your baby girl,
Blanche Hendrix
LaGrange Ga., Dec. 9, 1921.
Dear Santa Claus:
I am a little boy 7 years old. I want you to bring me a Liberty Gun, and also a little engine and a lot of candies and fruits. Don’t forget mama and papa. Be sure to not miss little Madalene’s sock. I’ll go for this time, hoping to see Old Santa soon.
From Little Harold Hamer
A modern postscript to the final letter should probably read, “you’ll shoot your eye out, Little Harold.”
Wishing you and yours a Merry Christmas!
