The Troup County Archives is the official repository for the Troup County government, the City of LaGrange government, the City of Hogansville government, and the Troup County School System. Records are transferred by a schedule determined by state regulation, local government departments, and Archives’ staff.

Below are some of the most frequently requested record types. Click on each one to read more.

The Archives holds marriage licenses from 1834 through 2000. Marriage applications / licenses from 2001 through the current year remain in the originating office at Troup County Probate Court. For staff to locate a marriage application from the 1900s, names of marriage partners and a book number and page number are needed. To obtain a book and page number contact the Troup County Probate Court.

The Archives holds LaGrange Municipal Court records from 2009 through 2019. Municipal Court cases from 2020 through the present year remain at the LaGrange Municipal Court. For staff to locate a municipal court case, the disposition date and the defendant’s name must be provided. To obtain a disposition date contact the LaGrange Municipal Court.

CRIMINAL CASES

The Archives holds Superior Court criminal cases from the early 1800s through 1995. For staff to locate these cases, a case number must be provided. A case number may be styled in the following manner: 95-R-1234. To obtain a case number please contact the Troup County Clerk of Court.

Note: The Archives only holds Superior Court minute books through 1991 and cannot conduct an index search for cases after that year. Staff must have a case number to locate the full case.

 

CIVIL CASES

The Archives holds Superior Court civil cases from the early 1800s through 2011. These cases include divorces, condemnations, judgments on land matters, and lawsuits in which money was involved. For staff to locate these cases, a case number must be provided. A case number will be styled as follows: 11-CV-1234. To obtain a case number please contact the Troup County Clerk of Court.

NOTE: The Archives only has Superior Court minute books through 1991 and cannot conduct an index search for cases after that year. Staff must have a case number to locate the full case.

CRIMINAL CASES

The Archives hold State Court criminal cases from 1989 through 2010. For staff to locate these cases, a case number must be provided. A case number will be styled as follows: 10-S-1234. To obtain a case number please contact the Troup County Clerk of Court.

NOTE: The Archives only holds State Court minute books from 1974 through 1991 and cannot conduct an index search for cases after that year. A case number must be provided to locate the full case.

CIVIL CASES
The Archives hold State Court civil cases from 1978 through 2014. For staff to locate these cases, a case number must be provided. A case number will be styled follows: 14-CS-1234. To obtain a case number please contact the Troup County Clerk of Court.

NOTE: The Archives only has State Court minute books from 1974 through 1991 and cannot conduct an index search for cases after that year. A case number must be provided to locate the full case.

The Archives holds building plans for Troup County, the City of LaGrange, and the City of Hogansville. The dates of building plans held by the Archives vary widely but are predominantly from the 1980s to the present. Residential building plans are rarely within the Archives’ holdings. In order to locate a building plan, the following is needed: an address and any information about when the structure was built or renovated. Any information about who originally owned or built the structure is also useful.

RESPONSE TIMES
Most government records requests made of the Archives are subject to the Georgia Open Records Act (O.C.G.A. §50-18-70 et seq.) and as such, will receive a response within three business days. Archives records staff will then communicate the length of time the request will take to fulfill.

VERIFICATION OF DESTRUCTION LETTERS

The Troup County Archives works with the local governments to comply with Local Government Record Retention Schedules and the Official Judicial Branch Court Records Retention Schedules as set forth by the State of Georgia and the Supreme Court and Judicial Council of Georgia. If a record is requested that has already been legally destroyed in accordance with the retention schedules, a letter may be written verifying the destruction of that record.

Troup County Archives’ Fees

The state of Georgia authorizes that an institution (Troup County Archives) may require a fee for the work and cost of locating an open records request. Troup County Archive’s fee is determined by O.C.G.A. § 50-18-71 (c), with no charge for the first fifteen minutes of work performed for the records request.

The minimum fee is $5.00 for each request.
Each page of records that are photocopied are 10 cents per page.
